About This Item

Edinburgh: Cadell and Co., 1829. Good +. 8vo, Volume I: 421pp, color folding map; Volume II: 432pp; Volume III: 436pp, folding chart at back cover. Volumes have marbled boards, with half red leather. Stamped decorative gilt spines with gilt raised bands and gilt titles on black ground reads "Hall's North America".

Spines are rubbed; Vol. I has an amateur leather patch at top left edge of spine, which partially obscures the topmost decorative raised band. the boards are lightly rubbed, but maintain their color. Internally, light scattered fox spotting. Previous owner, Henry Thorold, bookplate inside each front cover. The folding map in Vol. I has only one small split approximately one inch long at the fold; the folding chart has no splits whatsoever, just some light fox spotting. Volume I includes Hall's (a retired captain of the Royal Navy) impressions of New York City, the Hudson River, Sing Sing prison and West Point Academy. Volume III, Chapter XII includes a detailed account of a Native American ball game that Hall witnessed between neighboring Creek villages.
