New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1941. Bound in the publishers lilac illustrated cloth boards with black fine weave cloth to spine. This is the first American edition published in 1941 preceding the first UK edition by approximately one month and translated from the German by H.T.Lowe - Porter. Thomas Mann winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1929. The 196 pages remain in fresh, clean condition throughout and are tightly bound with no inscriptions. This is the American poets Peter Vierecks copy and has his bookplate neatly affixed to the front fixed endpaper. Book sits solid and square with all hinges strong. A very presentable copy in near fine condition. Housed in the distinctive dustwrapper with publishers printed price intact on front inside flap. One small chip to the head of spine otherwise a very good + example with only light signs of handling to the edges. Protected in a removable archival booksleeve to preserve its condition. Photographs of the book and the dustwrapper are available on request. A solid, presentable copy of Thomas Mann's novel set in the scenes of an India of long ago.. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. FIRST EDITION.
