About This Item
Lalande 425. *** In-8 de (2), 308 pp, 2 tableaux et 6 planches hors-texte. Veau brun marbré, dos orné, tranches marbrées. The Great Comet of 1744, which is also known as Comet de Chéseaux, was characterized by multiple tails and was undoubtedly the most beautiful of the 18th century. Chesaux is the first scientist to comput the orbit of a comet using Newtonian mechanics. Illustrated by 6 folding engraved plates, including a pretty plate which shows the comet as it appeared and another which shows instruments. 3 folding tables including 2 out of text. Jean-Philippe Loys de Cheseaux (1718 -1751) from Lausanne in Switzerland, was among the first to state, in its modern form, what would later be known as Olbers' paradox (that, if the universe is infinite, the night sky should be bright). Paper a little browned with a very slight brown track at the bottom of some pages, rubbed corners, it remains a fine copy. - -.
