New York: Abbeville Press, 1980. 1980 First Edition, stated on copyright page. INSCRIBED by Wesselmann on the title page, in blue ink, "For Mary and Alan / with much fondness / Tom Wesselmann / December 1981." A NEAR FINE copy: clean, otherwise unmarked and firmly bound. Pages are fresh and fine. Hardcover of ivory buckram cloth over boards is titled in black on spine and front cover with color pictorial pastedown on front cover. Cover is clean and sharp. Slight rubbing and toning along edges of boards and spine but otherwise cover is fine - no bumps, tears or frays. Binding and hinges firm and intact; light salmon colored endpapers fine. The book is in a plain, clear acetate jacket which is worn: toned along edges and spine, several tears and large chips along spine fold and to rear panel. It has done well in protecting the book. A momentous monograph on this important American artist - a leader of the 1960s Pop Art movement. It is actually autobiographic, as Slim Stealingworth was Wesselmann's pseudonym. Its 324 pages are packed with reproductions of Wesselmann's works: collages, early nude collages, bathtub collages, Great American Nudes, seascapes, smokers, mouths, faces, sculptures and several studies and drawings - as well as a few photographs of the artist and his studio. Many of the reproductions are in color. One of two plates on page 175 is pasted in, another plate is tipped onto the page. There are 2 fold-out pages with thumbnails of Wesselmann's fairly few prints and editions. An Exhibition List and Index are included. Laid into the book is the Abbeville Press invitation for a "meet the artist" party held on Dec. 8, 1981 at the999 (Nine Ninety Nine) Bookshop in New York City. 12 x 13-1/4." The book weighs 7.5 lbs. Additional postage required for Priority or International mailing.. Signed By Artist. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Good. Thick 4to.

1768 1ed ART Gilpin Essay Upon Prints Rembrandt Poussin Antique Collecting Guide

An early guide to antiquarian collecting!

William Gilpin was an English artist, Anglican cleric, schoolmaster and author. He was most notable as one of the originators of the concept of the picturesque, a set of rules for depicting nature. This notion would be expounded upon and expanded by other contemporary philosophers.
'An Essay upon Print's, attributed to Gilpin, is one of the first guides on print collecting in English. It became the standard for those collecting all kinds of prints, especially those of 'picturesque' quality. It also cautions against investing in copies of originals and acquiring poor impressions. Gilpin, who remained anonymous as the author, included the names of iconic artists – such as Rembrandt and Poussin – as those whose art is worthy of collecting.

William Hogarth was one of the most famous English artists of the 18th-century and his satirical cartoons appeared in comic-strips and other printed works for decades. His most famous works were short series of sketches that told moral stories through the lens of political satire – 'A Harlot's Progress,' 'A Rake's Progress,' and 'Hudibras.'
All three of these famous works, along with the rest of Hogarth's portfolio, are included in this late 19th-century London Printing edition, along with an introductory essay by James Hannay.

"The Cherokee Strip Land Run in Oklahoma on Sept. 16, 1893, played a prominent role in his [Covey's] early life—and produced a mental image that stayed with him until his last days. As a 15-year old boy, Covey helped his father and brothers claim and settle three quarter sections of land near Red Rock, Okla. The recollection of that tumultuous, dangerous and calamitous event was so vivid that he pictured them graphically in a lithograph made completely from memory in 1953. 'Opening of the Cherokee Strip to Settlement' churns with fallen horses, broken wagons, guns firing, discarded wheels, harnesses, clothing, supplies, even hats left behind on the rough and rugged land." – Pamela Thompson,

Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period.
