About This Item
London: E. & F.N. Spon, 1884. Octavo. xi, 83 pages with extensive plans (some folded, part double). The reason this became the major book on mining tin, Charleton's drawings were carefully laid down to scale after he had made original sketches. Since most of the serious mining of tin was done in Bohemia and Saxony in the Ore Mountains where metals had been retrieved back to the Bronze Age, he went to those locations and made deliberate notes about their innovations. The relative scarcity and importance of tin makes the process essential. This work changed the English conception and influenced the British search for tin sources throughout their extensive empire. Bound in brown cloth lettered i gilt, spine lettering gilt, chip to head, edges rubbed, previous owner's bookplate. A very good copy.
