Four and a half pages, small letterhead Brander Matthews was the chair ofDramatic Literatureat Columbia, a position that the university created for him, and the first of its kind in America. He was also a theatre critic and author. Among Matthews friends were Robert Louis Stevenson, Samuel Clemens, William Dean Howells, and Theodore Roosevelt. He was a bon vivant and extremely social man, a member of several clubs, including the Atheneum in London.
