About This Item

London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1950. First UK Edition. First hardcover edition, and the first time Greene's novelization of his famous screenplay saw print. "Pulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime - and thus begins this legendary tale of love, deception, and murder." Basis for the Oscar-winning 1949 film directed by Carol Reed, starring Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. Criterion 64; Wobbe A23.a. First Impression. Octavo; black cloth, with titles stamped in silver on spine; dustjacket; 188, [2]pp. Small bookplate to front pastedown, with a few small stains to endpapers, else very Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced 6s net), measuring ca.1/8" taller than the book; minor wear to spine ends and corner tips, with a single closed tear to upper edge of rear panel; bright, very Near Fine example.

Synopsis

The Third Man  is Greene's brilliant recreation of post-war Vienna, a city of desolate poverty occupied by four powers. Rollo Martins, a second-rate novelist, arrives penniless in Vienna to visit his old friend and hero Harry Lime. Harry is dead, but the circumstances surrounding his death are highly suspicious, and his reputation, at the very least, dubious. Graham Greene said of The Third Man that he "wanted to entertain [people], to frighten them a little, to make them laugh" and the result is both a compelling narrative and a haunting thriller.  The Fallen Idol  is the chilling story of a small boy caught up in the games that adults play. Left in the care of the butler, Baines, and his wife, Philip realizes too late the danger of lies and deceit. But the truth is even deadlier.
