Geneva: Jean Crespin, 1553. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" in 8s. [1-2] 3-796 pp. [2] blank & errata. The first Greek testament issued by Jean Crispin (or Crespin) from the third edition of R. Stephanus's 1550 edition, title with verso blank, preface by Joannes Crispinus Pietatis Studiosis. Printer's device present but publisher's information has been rubbed out. Crespin left his position as Advocate for the Parliament of Paris branded as a heretic and joined his friend Jean Calvin in Geneva. For a fuller biography of him, read Jeannine E. Olson's, "Jean Crespin, Humanist Printer Among the Reformation Martyrologist" in Manfred P. Fleischer (ed) The Harvest of Humanism in Central Europe; Essays in Honor of Lewis W. Spitz, p. 317-340. Darlow and Moule, (4626) 590-591 note: "The first Greek Testament issued by Jean Crispin (or Crespin) the French printer of Geneva, who went on to publish many editions of the Scriptures in various languages including the second quarto English Geneva Bible of 1570." The British and Foreign Bible Society copy lacks all matter after p. 474 (end of Acts). A copy in the Austrian National Library. This copy precedes the work of Theodore Beza in 1565 by a dozen years and it would appear to be the Greek text Calvin would have used in the last decade of his life and studies. Bound in full contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label gilt, other compartments fully gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, some chipping to spine ends, small piece of lower margin of page 175 torn away without loss of text. A very good copy in a very nice, early binding.

Montpleasant, Ohio: Elisha Bates, 1825. The author was a prominent Friend or Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s. Bates became the publisher of The Philanthropist, from 1818 to 1822. The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States and also supported temperance and the fair treatment of Native Americans. Bates began publishing another periodical, The Moral Advocate, in March 1821. Bates also became the leader of the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers.) Bates' only book, this volume, was self-published in 1825. Author Donald Good in his 1969 article "Elisha Bates and Social Reform" states that Bates' Doctrine of Friends was "judged to be one of the best brief accounts of Friends' view in existence." After the publication of his book, dramatic changes began to foment within the Quakers religion with what became known as the Hicksite - Orthodox Schism. Bates, who favored Orthodoxy, was a staunch opponent of… Read More

London: Printed for Dan. Brown at the Black Swan and Bible without Temple-bar, and Andr. Bell at the Cross-keys and Bible in Cornhil, 1700. First edition of this verse translation of the Song of Songs by Joseph Stennett (1663-1713), the first important Baptist hymnwriter in England: "Thy Lips, my Spouse, that move with skill, / Drops like the Hony-comb distil. / Hony and Milk's beneath thy Tongue, / Which feeds the Weak as well as strong." In his scholarly preface, Stennett is quick to assure readers that the Hebrew text is not about sexual desire, despite appearances: "some have denied that [Solomon] wrote it by Divine Inspiration; and make his Design to be only that of celebrating his Amours with Pharoah's Daughter, or some other person." The passion of the bridegroom and the bride is to be understood, however, as a divine allegory of Christ's love for his church, the same "mystical Espousals" found in the 45th Psalm, which Stennett also translates here. Tan leather heavily embossed with fruit, leaves and grain with the title on the front board and the spine. A personal Bible of outstanding artistry Beautifully bound and tooled edition
The Bible is a collection of religious texts, writings, or scriptures sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, Islam, Rastafari, and many other faiths. It appears in the form of an anthology, a compilation of texts of a variety of forms that are all linked by the belief that they are collectively revelations of God. These texts include theologically-focused historical accounts, hymns, prayers, proverbs, parables, didactic letters, admonitions, essays, poetry, and prophecies. Believers also generally consider the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration. Those books that are included in the Bible by a tradition or group are called canonical, indicating that the tradition/group views the collection as the true representation of God's word and will. A number of biblical canons have evolved, with overlapping and… Read More
