Vol. 1 has a couple of bumped corners and very minor rubbing--some dustiness to the uncut page ends. Vol II is near fine with only a slightly darkened spine. Each has a miniature frontispiece--one of George Washington--which was contributed by Howard Pyle and "pupils"--each volume is profusely illustrated with dozens of nicely done illustrations. Revolutionary war story in very collectible condition--and from the Adrian and M.B. Goldstone collection.

Olive green cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles. Endpapers with light green floral pattern. Former owner Thomas N. Haviland's name written on front free endpaper and bookplate on front fixed endpaper. Inscription on front fixed endpaper indicating that someone, possibly Haviland, purchased the book at Leary's Bookstore, in Philadelphia, in 1954. Thomas N. Haviland (d. 1986) in the late 1930s was the museum curator at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy. Condition is Very Good: Recased using original boards sometime in last 40 years. Modern endpapers. No interior writing, occasional foxing, some smudges, old corner folds. Small hole pp.13/14 affecting a few letters. Binding is sound. 160 pages with 4 plates and 4 engravings embedded in text all included in pagination. Contents bound at end as usual with this book. The plates and engravings are same topics and locations as the 1842 edition but are by a different engraver. True first edition is 1835 in either New York or Pennsylvania.
