Pp. x+214(last colophon), printed in red & black, engraved frontispiece portrait, the title page with black & white decorative border, text within double red ruled borders; roy. 8vo; red & grey cloth, designed by Edmund Hunter, handwoven with a pattern incorporating the title on the spine and the Nonesuch device on the boards; top edges gilt on the rough, fore-edges gilt (trimmed), bottom edges uncut; bookplate of David Levine, Sydney, on upper pastedown above an earlier (unidentified) bookplate designed by Byam Shaw, bookseller's sticker on lower pastedown, the free endpapers and title page offset, scattered foxing; The Nonesuch Press, London, 1927. Edition limited to 1,500 numbered copies. McKitterick 44. *The frontispiece was engraved by C. Sigrist after a 1674 portrait by Robert White. The distinctive cloth for the binding was woven in two ways, with the title and design being either grey or red. In this copy they are red. George Herbert (1593- 633) was a Welsh metaphysical poet and Anglican priest. First published in 1633, The Temple comprised all his English poems, with a preface by Nicholas Ferrar.
