About This Item

San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1951. First Thus. Limited edition of 160 copies. Quarter linen over patterned boards with gilt and morocco to spine. Measuring 380 x 270mm and beautifully illustrated throughout. An unused proof inserted loosely at front. A Near Fine example, with a hint of shelfwear to boards and evidence of a removed bookseller's ticket to the rear pastedown. Pleasing overall.

Established by brothers Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, the Grabhorn Press was among the finest U.S. printers from the 1920s-1960s and had a reputation for taking an adventurous approach to printing and illustrating important pieces of literature. The present is the press' first reinterpretation of a Shakespeare work -- notably, among the playwright's final plays -- and initiated a series featuring the visual work of Mary Grabhorn.

Synopsis

The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s last solo-written plays. This tragedy tells the story of an exiled ruler who uses magic to restore his daughter to power and argues that the powerful must show mercy. First performed in 1611,  The Tempest  has been put to varied interpretations, from those that see it as a fable of art and creation, with Prospero representing Shakespeare, and Prospero's renunciation of magic signaling Shakespeare's farewell to the stage, to interpretations that consider it an allegory of Europeans colonizing foreign lands. O wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world That has such people in ’t! (V.i.)
