I grew up in the mountains inland from Gloucester in New South Wales where my family sharefarmed land belonging to one of the large old companies which owned holdings there. In those days of the great depression I lived with the rainforest growing almost to the back door. The rainforest was being continuously felled in those days to make way for more dairy and beef production.

Even before school age I gained an interest in those marvellous plants growing on the trees and aided by devoted parents I had quite an established collection of the native orchids of the area by 1937-38.

My working life 'till coming to Queensland was spend on the land in the Gloucester-Taree area of the Manning River Valley. Barbara and I married in 1957 and as our family grew up we became more involved in the forests of the area as our children shared our love of the bush and nature itself: plus the joy of bird watching as well as orchid watching.

This is just a booklet in my bush jargon, warts and all, to pass on what knowledge we have of our love for, and the growing of, Australian Native Orchids.
