About This Item
Dark grey cover board with a touch of green. The lettering on front cover and spine is in white; there are dots in the o's. Illustrated end papers: the left and right-hand sides of the end papers are different. The illustrations advertise the booklets published by F. Warne & Co. Named are: "Tom Taylor of Gloster" "Tom Kitten", "Squirrell Nutkin", "Peter Rabbit", "Teggy Weahl (?)", "Benjamin Bunny", "Two Bad Mice", "J. Fisher". Further distinguishing details: The cat in the lower right-hand corner is brown, not white. The front and the rear end papers are identical, not mirror images of each other. On page 51, line 2: is no mention of "wept big tears", evidently not the first version. Instead, we find on page 45 "shed big tears", on page 63 "began to cry". No copyright notice. 85 pages. Illustrations: Frontispiece + 26 beautiful coloured images; the first version had 1+30 images. Format 140x110x11 mm; 5 ½ x 4.4 inch. Conclusion: 8th oder 9th printing, between 1904 and 1906. The lower frontispiece-leaf has become detached. On the back side of the front end paper: Two neat hand-written dedications in German, dated 1906 und 1947. Very slight signs of finger marks on the lower edge of some pages. The worst is shown on the image of page 27. Interesting ist the bookseller's blind-embossed address, on the right-hand upper corner of the front end paper. It reads: Jarrold & Sons Ltd, Norwich, London, Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Cromer & Sheringham. We will gladly send the remaining images to interested collectors.
Synopsis
The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. The story follows Peter Rabbit, a mischievous and disobedient young rabbit, as he ventures into the garden of farmer Mr. McGregor. The tale was written for five-year-old Noel Moore, son of Potter's former governess, in 1893. It was revised and privately printed by Potter in 1901 after several publishers' rejections but was printed in a trade edition by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1902.
