The Tale Of Peter Rabbit

By Potter, Beatrix

The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. The story follows Peter Rabbit, a mischievous and disobedient young rabbit, as he ventures into the garden of farmer Mr. McGregor. The tale was written for five-year-old Noel Moore, son of Potter's former governess, in 1893. It was revised and privately printed by Potter in 1901 after several publishers' rejections but was printed in a trade edition by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1902.

First edition identification and notes

Potter's book was initially rejected by publishers, who were looking for color illustrations. Resisting that idea, Potter paid for 250 copies to be printed at her own expense, which she distributed to family and friends in 1901 and shortly needed to print another 200 copies.

Frederick Warne & Co reached out to the author (although they were one of the initial rejectors) asking if she would cut some illustrations and add colors - and eventually, a contract was agreed upon. The first 8,000 copies of the trade edition sold out before printing, and by the end of 1902 28,000 copies were in print; a
year after the first commercial publication there were 56,470 copies in print.

Of the first printing, first edition run there were 2,000 deluxe editions bound in either green or yellow cloth. The rest were bound in brown board.

POTTER, Beatrix

London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1902. A Remarkably Fine Copy of the First Trade Edition of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" The First Edition with Thirty Colored Plates POTTER, Beatrix. The Tale of Peter Rabbit. London: Frederick Warne and Co., [n.d., 1902]. First Warne 'Trade' Edition, first, second, or third printing* (October-December 1902), all identical, and following all points in Quinby, and with "wept" on line 2 of page 51. Twelvemo (5 7/16 x 4 1/8 inches; 139 x 106 mm.). 97, [1] pp. Color frontispiece and thirty color plates (included in pagination). Black and white vignette on title-page. Original dark brown boards lettered in white on front cover and spine. Color pictorial label (being a repetition of the color illustration on p. 26) on front cover within a rectangular blind panel outlined in blind. Gray leaf-patterned endpapers (later changed to pictorial). The tiniest bit of foxing along fore edges of free endpapers. Light printer's ink stain to (blank) verso of page ninety-three. Quite simply one of the best copies we have seen in many years, with virtually no wear whatsoever to the binding which is as clean and fresh as the day it was published. Housed in a felt-lined full tan morocco clamshell case, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. "There are no recognizable differences between the first three printings, except that green boards were introduced after the first printing" (Linder). *This is the first commercially published printing, issued in October 1902 in an edition of 8,000 copies. This is known as the First Trade Edition, and was bound in either brown or gray boards with a color illustration of Peter in his light blue jacket mounted to the front board with white lettering above and below and to the spine. A further 12,000 copies were printed in November, and 8,220 copies in December 1902. These three printings are identical internally. The only variation that exists is that some copies of the second and third printings were issued in green boards. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was the first of the thirteen early "Peter Rabbit" Series which were published between 1902 and 1918. The Story of Peter Rabbit was originally conceived by Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) whilst on holiday with her family at Eastwood, Dunkeld, Scotland. Through the 1890s, Beatrix Potter sent illustrated story letters to the children of her former governess, Annie Moore. On September 4th, 1893 she wrote a 'picture letter' and sent it to Moore's eldest son Noël. This five year old boy was the recipient of what has become one of the most famous letters ever written. "Sep[tember] 4th, [18]93. My dear Noel, I don't know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy Cottontail, and Peter..." (Judy Taylor. Beatrix Potter's Letters, pp. 19-27). The Tale of Peter Rabbit was to become one of the preeminent children's books of the twentieth century, and firmly established Beatrix Potter as a popular author and illustrator. In 1900, Annie Moore, realizing the commercial potential of Potter's stories, suggested they be made into books. Potter embraced the suggestion, and, borrowing her complete correspondence (which had been carefully preserved by the Moore children), selected the letter written on 4 September 1893 to five-year-old Noel that featured a tale about a rabbit named Peter. Potter biographer Linda Lear explains: "The original letter was too short to make a proper book so [Potter] added some text and made new black-and-white illustrations... and made it more suspenseful. These changes slowed the narrative down, added intrigue, and gave a greater sense of the passage of time. Then she copied it out into a stiff-covered exercise book, and painted a colored frontispiece showing Mrs. Rabbit dosing Peter with camomile tea". Potter had originally titled the book The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor's Garden and sent it to several publishers, but her manuscript was rejected by all, including Frederick Warne & Co., who nearly a decade earlier had shown some interest in her artwork. Some publishers wanted a shorter book, others a longer one. But most wanted colored illustrations which by 1900 were both popular and affordable. These rejections were extremely frustrating to Potter, who knew exactly how her book should look and how much it should cost - she had adopted the format and style of Helen Bannerman's Little Black Sambo (1899). She decided to publish the book herself, and on 16 December 1901 the first 250 copies of her privately printed The Tale of Peter Rabbit were "ready for distribution to family and friends". This little book immediately proved to be a huge success amongst her friends, family and and others (including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and within just a few weeks she had requested a second impression (200 copies, February 1902) to be produced. At the same time Frederick Warne and Co. had reconsidered their position on publishing the work, and a deal was made with Potter to produce the first trade edition with colored plates throughout. In October of 1902 The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published by Warne with thirty illustrations in the three-color process printed by Edmund Evans. Its success was immense. So familiar did her animal characters become among children that Miss Potter was told how 'a small boy in church once inquired audibly whether the apostle was Peter Rabbit' (Linder, p. 92). Linder, p. 421; Quinby 2; V & A 1628.

London: Frederick Warne, 1902. First trade edition, deluxe binding in green cloth of this children's classic. 12 mo, original publisher's green cloth, lettered in red with publisher's monogram to upper cover, top edge gilt, gray leaf-patterned endpapers, with 31 color illustrations. With "wept big tears" on page 51, and leaf patterned end-papers. Linder notes that 2000 copies from the first 8000 were issued in "green cloth, light green cloth or olive-green cloth." Linder p 421; Quinby 2. In very good condition, rebacked with the original spine, retaining original endpapers. Housed in a a custom cloth clamshell box. In 1893, young Beatrix Potter, on holiday with her parents in Scotland, composed a letter to cheer Noel, the child of her former governess, who was suffering from rheumatic fever. "My dear Noel," she began, "I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits, whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter " The Tale of Peter Rabbit was born. Undaunted by multiple publishers' rejections, Potter published the first two private editions of Peter Rabbit at her own expense, both editions totaling only 450 copies which immediately sold. Publisher Frederick Warne agreed to print the first trade edition of Peter Rabbit and presented for the first time the now-familiar format of Potter's books: the earlier black-and-white line drawings replaced by full-color illustrations and the famous prancing image of Peter mounted on the front cover. "There are no recognizable differences between the first three printings, except that green boards were introduced after the first printing" (Linder, 421).

Green cloth with red titles to spine and front cover, also a pictorial onlay to the front. Grey floral endpapers. 97 pages. Colour illustrations. Spine and corners bumped and slightly worn. A few light scuff marks to cover edges. Joints were either cracked or broken but now repaired but evidence of old tape repairs and some slight loss of surface paper to endpapers. 1929. POTTER, Beatrix. THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT. London and New York: Frederick Warne and Co., N.d. [1904-1906]. 86 pages; frontispiece and 26 illustrations, all in color. And: POTTER, Beatrix. THE TALE OF BENJAMIN BUNNY. London and New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1904. 86 pages; frontispiece and 26 illustrations, all in color; vignette on title page in black and white. Both titles have been bound together in one 12mo. (13.5 x 10 cm) volume by Harrison, of Pall Mall, in three-quarter green calf with green marbled sides and matching endpapers, and with two sets of Potter's endpapers (Quinby plate II) bound in: a ffep. preceding THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT, a complete set between the two tales, and a rear fep. following THE TALE OF BENJAMIN BUNNY. On the front fly leaf Beatrix Potter has written: "This is an early edition of Peter Rabbit and I believe it a first edition of Benjamin Bunny - Beatrix Potter Nov. 1929." Her assessment is correct; the two titles correspond to Quinby nos. 2D & 6. The binding shows some superficial edgewear, and two leaves in PETER RABBIT (pp. 9-10 and 75-76) have a closed tear in margins measuring 3 cm and 1.5 cm respectively, else clean and very good - with a helpful authorial inscription.

POTTER, Beatrix.

London: Frederick Warne and Co.,, [1902]. Sextodecimo. Original grey paper-covered boards, titles to spine and front board in white, grey leaf-patterned endpapers. Frontispiece and 30 colour illustrations by the author. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Small tear and a little wear to head of spine, tiny split to head of front joint, but sound, covers and tips a little rubbed, a couple of small marks to p. 44, otherwise internally bright. An excellent copy, in unusually nice condition. First trade edition, first impression. Warne had reconsidered the "Bunny book", as they called it, following a second approach from Potter's friend Hardwicke Rawnsley, an author of children's verses who had rewritten the text in his own style. Warne were now prepared to publish it (though in a slight to Rawnsley, they preferred Potter's prose to his verse), on the proviso that Potter provide colour illustrations for the entire story; Potter finally agreed, knowing the book would first appear as she had envisioned, but in turn insisted that the illustrations be printed in the more expensive three-colour process, and the price must be one that "little rabbits could afford". In 1903, to make room for the introduction of the illustrated endpapers, four plates (including the one of Mrs McGregor and the pie) were withdrawn from the publication. The first trade edition has leaf-pattern endpapers and the text "wept big tears" on p. 51 (the text reads "cried big tears" in the privately printed edition; "wept big tears" in the first three impressions of the trade edition; and "shed big tears" from the fourth impression onwards).

The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Potter, Beatrix

London: Frederick Warne and Co. Early printing. Original gray boards, lettered in white and with color illustration to front board; illustrated endpapers. A near fine copy with a touch of wear to the upper spine, contemporary former owner pencil signature to half-title else a bright and excellent copy. The Tale of Peter Rabbit is Beatrix Potter's first children's book. Potter began illustrating as a hobby, and she drew the now well-known tale about adventurous Peter Rabbit's exploits in Mr. McGregor's garden from letters she wrote to friends, many of whom were children. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was first published privately by the author in a print run of 250 copies and was rejected by multiple commercial publishers before being accepted by Frederick Warne, who published the book in 1902 after Potter agreed to re-do her black and white illustrations in color. In 1903, Potter published The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and The Tailor of Gloucester, and she continued to publish two or three pictorial children's books per year. Today, Potter's characters are iconic, and her books have been translated into numerous languages. Notably, Potter's success came not only from her artistic abilities but also her prudent business skills; the Beatrix Potter Society notes that Potter was "a woman of unusual entrepreneurial genius" who "registered a Peter Rabbit doll in 1903, recognizing that 'spin-off' merchandise such as painting books, board games, and printed wallpapers would be marketing assets for her work.". Hard Cover. Fine.
