Paris: Editions A. et J. Picard, 1949. First edition in French. Hardcover. Very good.. First edition in French of The Creation of the Rococo (Philadelphia 1943), translated by Jeanne Marie. Quarto, original printed paper wrappers. Includes extensive bibliographical references in the footnotes and index. "The basic pioneer work on the Rococo style with special attention to its creation during the last years of louis XIV and the Regency period. Treats the Rococo as a French style only distantly related to Italian Baroque. A difficult book for the student and the general reader, most rewarding for the specialist" Arntzen & Rainwater, p.42. Ehresmann 1247. Wittenborn Book Seller's tag at rear. This copy from the library of noted art critic and educator, S. Lane Faison. It has his stamp, is signed by him and there are some notes, marginalia in his hand. Illustrated. Two hundred seventy-four illustrations on plates.
