First UK edition. 4-1/4 x 7-1/2 inches. vii, (3), 320 pp, Full brown tan calf, gilt-ruled boards and edges, raised bands with gilt decorations in the panels, red morocco label, (small piece missing in label, slightly effecting type) marbled edges and endpapers. Over all very good copy. Internally age toned paper and some spotting on borders of plates.

4 chromolithograph plates entitled "Cape Hotham", "Breaking through the ice", "Resolute winter quarters" and "Sledge travelling", all drawn by Lieutenant Osborn and lithographed by M & N Hanhart, and 7 engraved illustrations in text. Engraved folding map (190 x 600 mm) coloured with blue in outlines "shewing the track of H.M.S. Pioneer, in search of Sir John Franklin, 1851-1852" by Trelawney Saunders. TPL 3193

An account of Osborn's search for Franklin in Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound, and wintering experiences at Griffith Island. Informative notes on west Greenland Eskimos, ice conditions, hunting adventures, and sledge journeys.
