Mass Market Paperback. Anais Nin (1903 – 1977) was a French-born American diarist, essayist, novelist, and writer of short stories and erotica. Born to Cuban parents in France, Nin was the daughter of the composer Joaquín Nin and the classically trained singer Rosa Culmell. Nin spent her early years in Spain and Cuba, about sixteen years in Paris (1924–1940), and the remaining half of her life in the United States, where she became an established author. She was a finalist for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1976. A Spy in House of Love is an exquisitely crafted, sometimes-puzzling little novel well worth reading for its beautiful language and occasionally penetrating insights. The tale of Sabina, an enigmatic and ultimately insecure woman who is wedded to the indulgent and adoring Alan while nevertheless still being driven compulsively to stray, is told in a style often distilled down to a prose poetry whose savor lingers in the mind like a fragrance cloying half-sensed yet evocative in the wondering nose. Really, it is the journey--the subtle psychological investigations and the syrupy flow of Nin's verbal art--rather than any final conclusion or resolution that makes the read worthwhile.

Synopsis

Beautiful, bored and bourgeoise, Sabina leads a double life inspired by her relentless desire for brief encounters with near-strangers. Fired into faithlessness by a desperate longing for sexual fulfilment, she weaves a sensual web of deceit across New York. But when the secrecy of her affairs becomes too much to bear, Sabina makes a late night phone-call to a stranger from a bar, and begins a confession that captivates the unknown man and soon inspires him to seek her out...
