Collison, in "Bibliographies, Subject and National” calls this work "..a model of its kind. More than 3,000 items, books, periodical articles, and transactions of learned societies are minutely classified under the following main headings: (a) General authorities, (b) origins, (c) Anglo-Saxon period, (d) period between 1066 and 1485. There are short but good critical annotations, and a detailed index. There are also four appendixes: reports of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records; the Historical Manuscripts Commission, the Rolls Series; and chronological tables of the principal sources.
