About This Item

London, England: Bloomsbury, 1995. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. London, England: Bloomsbury, 1995. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 345 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. David Guterson's finest achievement. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Although it follows, the production values of the British Edition are superior in every respect to the American Edition, a volume that is worthy of its contents. Presents David Guterson's "Snow Falling On Cedars". His masterpiece. "The kind of book where you can smell and hear and see the fictional world the writer has created, so palpably does the atmosphere come through. Set on an island in the straits north of Puget Sound, in Washington, where everyone is either a fisherman or a berry farmer, the story is nominally about a murder trial. But since it is set in the 1950's, lingering memories of the Second World War, internment camps, and racism help fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the book is Guterson's rendering of the people and the place" (Publishers Weekly). The basis of the very fine film adaptation by Scott Hicks, with Ethan Hawke in a career-defining performance, and a brilliant supporting cast. An absolute "must-have" title for David Guterson collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by David Guterson. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: There are far many more signed copies of the American First Edition, not surprisingly so. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1994 for "Snow Falling On Cedars". One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAVID GUTERSON TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0747521085.
