Sierra Club Books began pairing full-color nature photographs with the words of an American naturalist when it first published "In Wildness is the Preservation of the World" (with quotes from Henry David Thoreau) in the early 1960s. In the instance of this book at hand, Edward Abbey was still very much alive when photographer Philip Hyde and he collaborated on a photographic exploration of Abbey's favorite territory. A beautiful volume on many levels, with narrative supplied by both men. Environmentalists and lovers of the American Southwest will find a connection here.
