New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1947. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Octavo, 622, xlii pages. In Very Good minus condition with a Good dust jacket. Spine black with white lettering. Dust jacket protected with a mylar covering, price cut. Some general shelfwear and rubbing, including chipping to the head and tail of spine and corners, two small drops stains to tail of spine. Cloth to head of spine with some rubbing. Light foxing to endpapers. Inscribed on the title page: "For Mr. Henry P. Slaughter, with the best wishes of John Hope Franklin February 20, 1948." JR consignment. Shelved in case 1. John Hope Franklin was an American historian whose 'From Slavery to Freedom' has gone through ten editions. He taught at Howard University from 1947 to 1956.




Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library: "Slaughter's collection was highly regarded as one of the best and largest libraries of materials by and about Black people...The collection numbered over 10,000 volumes...in Washington DC...The collection documents a wide range of subject areas including slavery, the Civil War, religion, music, art, theater, secret societies, folklore, poetry, fiction, biographies, Africa, Carbbean, South America, and a large number of items on Abraham Lincoln." He sold his collection in 1946 to the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library, and this volume would have been accquired or given as a gift soon after and remained in his library in DC. 1368916. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
