About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1977. Hardcover. Small 4to. Cream and blue cloth, pictorial dust jacket. 205pp. Near fine/near fine. Tight, handsome first edition of this collection of essays profiling Charles Chaplin, H.L. Mencken, Humphrey Bogart, Adlai Stevenson, Bertrand Russell and Edward VIII. Best of all, expertly tipped to front flyleaf is a 5" X 2" slip boldly signed by Cooke in black fineline -- and laid in is the ideal bookmark, Cooke's original transmittal envelope (lacking legible postal cancellation, but early 1970s vintage).
