UK: Thomas Nelson & Sons. Hardcover. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Partial set from one of the many incarnations of Nelson's Classics Series, this from around 1950. 16mo. Matching volumes with cream-coloured boards, gilt decoration to spine and deep red spine labels printed over with gilt titles. Upper text block edges coloured red. Both in original glassine over-jackets - scarce survivals as these were usually discarded by buyers. Very few marks on boards but some slight discolouration at extreme edges. Spines a little sunned. Internally all bright, crisp and clean. Glassine over-jackets chipped on both volumes with some loss. Internally bright, crisp and clean. Previous owner's initials on front free endpapers. Jane Eyre - 554pp. Shirley - 642pp. Nice pair. 0
Synopsis
Set during the Napoleonic wars at a time of national economic struggles, Shirley is an unsentimental yet passionate depiction of conflict among classes, sexes, and generations. Struggling manufacturer Robert Moore considers marriage to the wealthy and independent Shirley Keeldar, yet his heart lies with his cousin Caroline. Shirley, meanwhile, is in love with Robert’s brother, an impoverished tutor. As industrial unrest builds to a potentially fatal pitch, can the four be reconciled?
