About This Item
First American hardcover, with dust jacket, published by Thomas Nelson, 1958. First published in Germany in 1957, this is the first American hardcover, translated by Edward Fitzgerald. Henno Martin and Hermann Korn were German geologist, working in Namibia, when WWII started. To avoid internment as enemy aliens in the British administered country, they spent two and a half years living in the Namib dessert, waiting out the war, but also learning about the animals, tribes people and geology of the area. The dust jacket is intact and is not price clipped, original price of $5 is printed on the lower corner of the front flap. Jacket has some edge wear to the top edge of the front panel and head of the spine, a short closed tear of about an inch, with some short creases around it, on the lower left at the gutter of the spine. A minor wear mark on the spine panel, about 1/4" tall. Jacket has been protected with a clear, removable cover. Sturdy black cloth covered cover boards, with the author and title imprinted on the spine in gold. Lettering is crisp and not worn. Corners are not worn, no edge wear. Detailed maps on the front and back paste down and end papers. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. 32 pages of black and white photos through the text. Edges of the text block are clean except for the top edge which has many age tanning spots. Binding is tight and square. This copy is not a library discard copy. Attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
