Shanghai of To-Day; A Souvenir Album of Thirty-Eight Vandyke Prints of "The Model Settlement by Green, O.M - 1927

Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh, 1927. First Edition. Quarto. 15 pages, 38 unnumbered leaves of plates. Very rare. OCLC shows the only recorded copy at the National Library of New Zealand. O.M. Green was the editor of the North China News, here he provides images with careful descriptions of the Shanghai in the late 1920's as well as important introduction. How the city rebounded from the cholera outbreak in the summer of 1926 because of the disrepair of the Chapei Waterworks. Green notes that Marshal Sun had said: "The Chinese will not be able to justify a demand for the surrender of International Settlements until they can produce another city as well run by themselves. He speaks of the official corruption which was excessive. It certainly shows a Westerners low regard for the Chinese while yet admiring the beauty of the city. A scarce and fascinating work bound in ¼ white cloth over paper over stiff card, mounted photo to upper covered within red frame, pictorial endpapers, some chipping to the yapped edges. A very good copy.
