Shakespeare in Harlem is a garland of verses about the "dream deferred" to which Lorraine Hansberry refers in "Raisin in the Sun." An old man, sitting on a curbstone, ponders the problem of migration to Harlem from the South and the West Indies.

Octavo. 124pp. Near fine with sunning along the spine and two miniscule marks on the front board in about good or better dust jacket with chipping on the spine and front flap, tear to the rear flap and some general edgwear. Inscribed in Hughes' wonderful hand just two months after publication: "Inscribed especially for Dorothy Elvidge, with the sincere regards of - Langston Hughes Chicago, April 27, 1942." Elvidge was the comptroller of the Rosenwald Fund, which granted fellowships to numerous African-American writers, artists and intellectuals from the late 1920s to the late 1940s, including Hughes. He later wrote the story "Simple and the Rosenwald Fund," which lamented its demise. A interesting association.
