About This Item

San Francisco: Sexual Freedom League SF, 1971. Magazine. 20p. folded tabloid newspaper, articles, poetry, fiction, services and resources, events, nude photos and illustrations, toning, chipping at spine fold heel else good on newsprint. Cover story on the arrest of Arlene Elster the 29 year old manager of the Sutter (Erotic) Cinema charged with exhibiting obscene matter. Lovely sensual line drawings throughout and on cover by Sonya.

According to the Online Archive of California, Bancroft: "The Sexual Freedom League was founded in 1963 in New York City. Julian Beck, Allen Ginsberg, and Dr. Leo Koch were among those on the Advisory Committee of the original group, which was active in demonstrations for a wide range of causes."

The original SFL was formed in NYC by Jefferson Poland in 1963 as New York City League for Sexual Freedom. When Poland moved to the Bay Area from NYC in 1966 he founded the SFL in the East Bay which was a loose-knit group with few rules, little organization and no fees. After he broke away several others stepped in to create their own versions of the league including Richard Thorne, Margo Rila and her husband Frank Esposito Rila. By 1971 several SFL chapters had formed around the US including the one of which Don Jackson was a member. Jackson, whose copy this is, was a gay activist in California who contributed to The Alpine County Project aka Stonewall Nation. In a letter responding to internal strife over liberal and conservative leaders in the SFL Jackson, a Libertarian, offered himself as a liberal candidate for office. The San Francisco chapter was headed up by Margo St. James at this time.
