About This Item

Barnes & Noble, 1989. First American edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First American edition. Fine (some embrowning to the pages) in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 291 pp. with index, bibliography. Illustrations. Scarce work that offer the key to 17th century Ireland, examining the religious groups that fought for possession of its land. Though Gaelic Ulster was defeated in 1603, its religion was not and adhered to a form of pre-Reformation Catholicism; the Old English ahered to the secular clergy and served the Counter-Reformation. The Protestant Church, nominally Anglican, was actually Calvinist; here were Scots Presbyterians planted in Ulster; the Roman Catholics were royalists but could not in the end be loyal to both king and Pope.
