At the time Quine was still married to his first wife Naomi Clayton; he would divorce her in 1947, and marry Marjorie one year later - a meaningful presentation copy. Quine wrote O Sentido da Nova Logica - written and first published in Portuguese, rather than Quine's other works which were written and first published in English - while serving as visiting professor at the Free School of Sociology and Political Science of the University of São Paulo in Brazil. It was intended as an introductory work on mathematical logic, with an emphasis upon its practical and philosophical applications; parts of the work were later developed into Quine's English-language works Methods of Logic and From a Logical Point of View.
