CONDITION

In overall good condition. The binding is in firm and tight condition. There are some general scuffs, marks and knocks to the binding and some small losses of leather to some of the spine compartments. Overall, a nice signed binding in good condition.

INTERESTING

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, the early 1890s saw him become one of the most popular playwrights in London. He is best remembered for his epigrams and plays, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the circumstances of his criminal conviction for gross indecency for consensual homosexual acts, imprisonment, and early death at age 46.

Wilde is now known for more than his wit and his iconic libel trial. His work contains real depth and political engagement while the world-famous Importance of Being Earnest is a much queerer beast than it first appears. His essays on aesthetics are still stimulating today. During his travels after release from prison, called himself Sebastian Melmoth, deriving this pseudonym from the title character in his great-uncle's (Charles Maturin) famous Gothic novel of 1820.

Sebastian Melmoth contains epigrams and aphorisms and the essay "The Soul of Man".
