[New York, 19 October 1952].. Original borderless gelatin silver print, 25.5 x 17 cm (9 7/8 x 6 3/4 inches). Matted. Fine. A beautiful portrait of the then 25 year old singer, dating from the year of her Broadway appearance in the musical review, NEW FACES. The 1954 film version was her first credited screen role. This print bears Van Vechten's ink studio stamp on the verso. The subject, date and negative number are also written on the verso in ink, in Van Vechten's hand. There are prints of three other negatives from the same session in the Library of Congress Van Vechten photo archive, and two other prints from the session were exhibited in EXTRAVAGANT CROWD CARL VAN VECHTEN'S PORTRAITS OF WOMEN (Yale, Beinecke Library, 2003). [New York], 17 February 1953.. Original borderless gelatin silver print, 23.5 x 18 cm (9.25 x 7.25 inches). Fine. A fine portrait of the young singer, then in the ascendance of her career, less than a year after her role as St. Settlement in the Broadway revival of Gertrude Stein's FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS. This print bears Van Vechten's blindstamp, and on the verso his ink studio stamp. The subject, date and negative number are also written on the verso in ink, in Van Vechten's hand. There is a print of another negative from the same sitting, albeit dated in the catalogue entry a week earlier - an impossibility as it is separated from this photograph by only one other exposure and the set and dress are identical - in the LC Van Vechten photo archive. Stated first edition of this wildly popular and seminal work which sold over a million copies and remained no. 1 on the Times bestseller list for months. The pages are in near new condition. The only flaw I could find was that a previous owner (presumably) printed "John Irving " at the top of the first fly leaf. The cover and spine are in excellent condition except for some light shelf wear at the top and bottom of the spine, also at the tip of the upper corner of the front cover and an air bubble crease on the inside front cover..The back page of the dust jacket is missing. Remaining Dj has some minor tears around edges. It is un-clipped, showing the $12.50 price. There is also a cardboard bookmark from a bookstore in Burlington Vermont.

[Honolulu or San Francisco]: NP, 1923. First Edition, First Printing. Green wraps, with title and rules printed in black. Very Good+. 8vo. Pp. 100. A particularly fresh copy, with slight closed tears (1") at front cover hinge at head and tail. Please see photos. Amid "excitement caused by this gold fever, and the frantic preparations made to get there, and get there quick," Fraser departed San Francisco for Skagway on the S.S. Queen in early January, 1898. "The fever was in the air. The general salutation when you met an acquaintance was, 'Are you going to the Klondike?'." Includes an anecdote about "confidence men of Seattle" -- "Seattle was Klondike crazy. More so, if possible, than San Francisco." Contains two pages on scurvy. As an accurate journalist living in San Francisco, Fraser was cautious about overstating the palpable West Coast hullabaloo generated by the discovery of Yukon gold.
