About This Item

London, Macmillan & Co., 1922 1st Ltd Ed. 300 copies.. Two Volumes. Hardbacks, 9 x 7 inches. Quarterbound maroon cloth to spines and vellum parchment to boards. Gilt lettering to spines, with gilt line details and signature designs to fronts. In very good condition. Spine faded on vol.1. Darkening to vellum on boards. Bump to top edge of front board vol.1. Boards part faded with handling marks. Slight browning to endpapers. Occasional small marks. Else a clean and tight copy. 298 & 371pp. When Macmillan first published this book in 1920 it soon became the centre of a new field of scholarship - oenophilly. This book is a series of reminiscences based on Professor Saintsbury’s purchases from 1884 to 1915 and on his dinner-party menus which accompanied them. Although the greater part of the text is devoted to wine, there are substantial sections on beer, cider and spirits, of which the good Professor kept a considerable store in his cellar. It has inspired many amateurs to experiment widely and to form opinions unaffected by the fashion of the day.
