About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1939. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 32 pp. photographs and illustrations. First edition, with a page of Walker's typed manuscript with handwritten corrections laid in. Landmark survey of California literary history, built upon the personal histories of eight key figures: Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Prentice Mulford, Ina Coolbrith, Charles Warren Stoddard, Joaquin Miller, Henry George, and Ambrose Bierce. One particularly noteworthy aspect of Walker's work was his acknowledgement of the parallels between Twain's development as a writer with his life in California and Nevada. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with gilt stamping. Unobtrusive bookplate to the front pastedown. Some light wear to the dust jacket; otherwise an especially crisp copy. Better than very good.
