About This Item
Synopsis
Rule Of The Bone is a 1995 novel by Russell Banks. It is a bildungsroman about the 14-year-old American narrator, Chappie, later dubbed Bone (named for a tattoo that he gets), who, after having dropped out of school, turns to the guidance of a Rastafarian Jamaican illegal immigrant. The novel is split into two halves, the first of which concerns his family struggles in America, and the second takes place in Jamaica.
Reviews
Rule Of The Bone cracked my shit up and also made me cry a little. Bone is the nickname of this scrawny little fourteen-year-old boy with a terrible home life. He ends up running away from home, makes a few nutty friends, and moves into a school bus with a Rastafari man who ends up taking Bone to Jamaica at some point in the book where he actually is reunited with his biological father. It's funny, infuriating, and touching all at the same time and at certain points.
