About This Item
London: Printed for Longmans, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, 1831. First Edition. Octavo. xxix, 411 pages. From the author's earlier history in Jamaica where the heat led to countless deaths among his unit [the 70th Surrey Regiment at Antiqua. So many were dying, funerals were discontinued since they led only to more depression. His accounts of Lisbon were horrifying. He said it was not only the dirtiest place in Europe (but possibly the world). Besides excrement in the streets, there were dead dogs, rats, and lice everywhere. After discussing the battles in the Netherlands, he concludes with Waterloo, especially, Sir Thomas Picton's Division. Bound in 3/4 green polished calf over marble paper covered boards, rebacked with old spine laid down retaining the original pale yellow endpapers, Early previous owner's name to front free endpaper. A very good copy.
