The author examines the huge challenge facing both the north and south in the Civil War with an unprecedented 620,000 dead soldiers. Contains an index and source notes in the rear. There is a faint trace of tape residue (?) at the top edge of the spine & extending onto the covers for an inch or so, else this is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates. The dust jacket is in similarly nice condition with no chips, tears, or markings. This is the second printing in the first year of the book's publication. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall; 342 pages .

Synopsis

Drew Gilpin Faust is president of Harvard University, where she also holds the Lincoln Professorship in History. Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study from 2001 to 2007, she came to Harvard after twenty-five years on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of five previous books, including Mothers of Invention: Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War, which won the Francis Parkman Prize and the Avery Craven Prize. She and her husband live in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
