About This Item

[Np: np, c.1930s]. 12 panel fold-out brochure; printed on recto and verso. 3¼ x 3 inches folded; 37¾ x 3 inches unfolded. 21 half tone illustrations from photographs. Near fine

From "Freshman" to "Sophomore"-a prospectus for Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, cleverly designed to imitate a strip of movie film with each "cell" depicting a scene of life at an élite women's college.

The "film's" plot presents the story of a typical incoming freshman, her anxieties allayed by a helpful de-coding of college and campus mysteries, routines, and activities. As the story unfolds, her experiences reveal much about the college, its personnel, and the school's educational and sports amenities.

The illustration's caption texts, like a documentarian's film narrative, show a freshman meeting the Head of House, her residence cottage, and the school's memorial gates, library, botanic gardens, astronomical observatory, and chapel. There is even an academic procession and a sighting of college president, William Allen Neilson. Sports and activities include a thought of Junior year abroad, art and music, horseback riding, swimming, and skiing. That college staple, class outside? Of course! "And in no time at all...she has become a SOPHOMORE."

Cleverly conceived and designed 1930s college prospectus for a women's college.
