Norman, (1994): University of Oklahoma Press. First Edition. Cloth Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Small Quarto. 292p. index. Eight Deer Jaguar Paw is the modern understanding of the name for an important figure in Mesoamerican heroic history, Eight Deer's stomping ground was a real place--the villages of Jaltepec and Tilantongo in the Mixteca Alta, or today's Oaxaca, Mexico. The authors have combined three separate and independent bodies of information, namely the folded screen codices, a full-coverage archaeological survey and an ethnographic elicitation of the Mixtec-Language. The codices are Precolumbian and early Colonial pictorial and text manuscripts. In short, this work is a valuable and significant contribution to Mesoamerican studies, specifically in its close linkage of manuscripts, ethnographic Toponymy, and archaeological settlement survey. It has become scarce because it was a small print run and considered essential for both the university library as well as the scholar of Mesoamerica. A fine copy bound in gold cloth, spine lettering gilt over black, in fine pictorial dust jacket.
