About This Item

London: North-Eastern Newspapers Limited, 1909. Pamphlet. 19p., softbound, a sewn pamphlet (threads perfectly in order) measuring 6.5x4.5 inches, in plain printed oxblood wraps. Covers are completely detached having thoroughly split along the spinefold, bearing ragged edges at the split and a half-inch chip at foot of front cover. A salvageable item, should one be collecting merde-i-ana, and certainly a handleable one, ergo a "reading copy". No other compromise of soundness to covers or to textblock, and entirely clean and unmarked. From opening paragraphs, this: " Although no apology need be tendered to the countrymen of Hume and Adam Smith for proposing the fundamental basis of any doctrine or institution as a fit and proper subject for debate, some explanation would seem to be requisite to account for the appearance of a native of the country South of the Tweed, where by repute shallow empiricism reigns supreme.. To extenuate this apparently unwarrantable act of poaching in the Scottish intellectual preserves, the interloper can only plead that two or three years ago he became dissatisfied with the stock arguments advanced on behalf of Sanitary propaganda" ..etc etc.
