Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1887. Later printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [2], 490, [1], 2-7, [13] (pages of illustrated publisher's advertisements), [2] pp. Orange cloth with black lettering on the front board and gold decorations on the front board, spine lettered in gold. While the text is not illustrated the publisher's ads in the rear contain several charming wood engravings. Encyclopedia, "Helen Hunt Jackson". Jackson's most significant work is her novel Ramona. She is remembered for her activism on behalf of Native Americans in Southern California. An early reprint of Jackson's classic novel. A Very Good book with the front hinge tender but binding is strong, edges of the boards show rubbing, bookplate on the front pastedown.

Synopsis

Ramona, a novel written by Helen Hunt Jackson, is the story of a part-Scottish and part-Native American orphan girl growing up and getting married in Southern California, suffering racial discrimination and hardship. Originally serialized in the Christian Union on a weekly basis, the novel became immensely popular. Overall, it has had more than 300 printings, been made into four film versions, and has been performed as an outdoor play annually since 1923.
