London: George Allen and Unwin Limited, 1959. First edition of Pope-Hennessy's esteemed biography of Queen Mary, for which he was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1960. Octavo, bound in full crushed red morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, illustrated. In fine condition. One of the leading biographers of his time, James Pope-Hennessy wrote several biographies, including those of Monckton Milnes, the Earle of Crew, and Queen Mary, for which he was created Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1960.
