1857. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. 15-3/4 x 13-3/4 inches, was folded now flat, typed and handwritten manuscript and transfer document with docketing information handwritten on verso. Faded seal and two 1/8 inch holes at top, otherwise very good condition. Some content and detail... William Hoar of the Township of Penetanguishene in the County of Simcoe, yeoman... One acre and three fourths of an acre Thirty Five pounds... Lots Numbers Five Six Seven and Eight on the West side of Penetanguishene Road in the afore said Town of Penetanguishene... 26th December 1857

Signed: Sir Edmund Walker Head, E. A. Meredith, Secretary, & Andrew Russell, Commissioner of Crown Land Sir Edmund Walker Head: He was simultaneously Governor General of the Province of Canada and Lieutenant Governor of Canada West and Canada East (1854-1861) and formerly Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick (1847-1854). He was the cousin of Sir Francis Bond Head. E.W. Head was elected governor of the reconfigured Hudson's Bay Company in 1863 after his return to England, which he held until his death. While Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick, Head authorized the creation of an engineering faculty at the University of New Brunswick. This was the first such programme in what would become Canada. In his honour, the buildings housing this faculty at UNB are called Head Hall. The city of Edmundston, New Brunswick was named after him. In the county of Renfrew, a township of Head was named in his honour.

Edmund Allen Meredith (1817-1899) CMG, LL.D., M.A., was Under Secretary of State for Canada; a prison reformer, writer, president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec and the third principal of McGill University from 1846 to 1853. Meredith is best remembered for his role in prison reform, of which he was an active exponent. He also founded the Ottawa Art Association, served as President of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec, the Park Lawn Tennis Club (Toronto), the Civil Service Board, the Ottawa Literary and Scientific Society, and Vice-President of the Astronomical and Physical Society of Toronto, and finally the part-time position in retirement as Vice-President of the Toronto Loans and Assurance Company (a.k.a. Toronto General Trusts).
