FIRST EDITION OF "THE FIRST TECHNICAL PAPER ON COMPUTER CHESS" (Christies, Origins of Cyberspace Auction, 2005). Claude Shannon's seminal 1950 paper is considered "the foundation of computer chess" (Reilly, Milestones in Computer Science and Information Technology, 55). "The framework he introduced has guided most of the subsequent analysis of the problem" (Newell, Shaw, & Simon, 44). "Since the mid-1940s, scientists had aimed to create a thinking machine, an apparatus that could compete with or even surpass the human brain in logical operations, pattern recognition, problem solving and even language. Chess was found to be a useful testing ground because of its combination of simple rules and mind-bending complexity... Shannon was fascinated by chess' potential in the pursuit of what he called 'mechanized thinking.' But he became convinced that computer chess and other AI pursuits should not be modeled on human thought... Computers, at least as they were understood then, could calculate very quickly, following programmed instructions" (Shenk, 201, 211). Shannon believed that chess would be the ideal proving ground for this new type of intelligence. Believing that theoretically, "the game could be fully converted into one long mathematical formula," Shannon's paper was "concerned with the problem of constructing a computing routine or 'program' for a modern general purpose computer which will enable it to play chess" (Shannon; Shenk). It "was the first publication to describe how a position might be evaluated and how a game tree might be searched. The paper was the text of a lecture given by Shannon to the Institute of Radio Engineers on 9 March 1949) (Cooper & Leeuwen, Alan Turing, 644). This paper also includes an aside that came to be known as 'the Shannon number," the number of possible chess games that can be played. That number, also known as "the game tree complexity of chess," is based on Shannon's calculation on a logical approximation that each game has an average of 40 moves and each move a player chooses between 30 possible moves. That makes a total of 10120 possible games. This number is known as the number of Shannon. Shannon, an electrical engineer, was also known as "the father of information theory." CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor & Francis, Ltd. Ex-libris bearing only ghosting from the removal of a plate of the front flyleaf and faint stamps on the text block. There are no marks on the spine or title page. Full volume. 4to (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). 1299 pages. Illustration: In-text illustrations and plates throughout. Bound in red cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Slight scuffing and edge wear; slight fading at the spine. A large volume tightly and very solidly bound. Very small mark on the first page of the Shannon paper (see scan), otherwise bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

Le Traite des Amateurs is a chess treatise composed, by a "Society of Amateurs" contemporaries of Philidor; who all frequented the Cafe de la Regence, in Paris. Of these, the strongest players were Bernard, Carlier, Leger, and Verdoni. Philidor, constantly resident in London, took no part in writing the "Traite des Amateurs;" which in fact embodies many criticisms and comments upon his earlier printed book. Only four masters of the group, considered the strongest, are known: Bernard, Carlier, Leger and Verdoni. A part, partially, from Verdoni, who is the only one of the Amateurs with his own entry in the Oxford Companion to Chess, not very much is… Read More

Provenance Glasgow Chess Club (Betts: 7-36) Limited to 500 copies. First edition. The London 1899 chess tournament was without a doubt one of the very strongest tournaments ever held on British soil. Almost every great master of the day was present including the past and reigning world champions. It proved to be the swan song of the old champion Wilhelm Steinitz but for Emanuel Lasker it was a glittering success which propelled him way beyond the other grandmasters of the time.
All important players were invited. Many of these players were the champions of the country that they represented. Refusals came from Siegbert Tarrasch and Rudolf Charousek (illness). The businessman Amos Burn had to withdraw at the opening's day. Fifteen participants played double rounds from 30 May to 10 July 1899, except for Richard Teichmann. He… Read More

Calabria had already produced such players as Leonardo di Bono and Michele di Mauro. From his writing it's apparent the he wasn't educated and likely came from a lower class family. Already in 1619, Greco started keeping a notebook of tactics and particularly clever games and he took up the custom of giving copies of his manuscripts to his wealthy patrons. In Rome Monsignor Corsino della casa Minutoli Tegrini, Cardinal Savelli and Monsignor Francisco Buoncompagni all received copies (of which there are extant copies, dated 1620 in the Corsiniana library in Rome, under the title, Trattato del nobilissimo gioco de scacchi).… Read More

The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. (2) After he resigned his commission in the British Army but before moving to the United States, he lost a match to George Alcock MacDonnell (+4 -7 =2) and won a second (+6 -3 =2). Description:
iv+252 pages with diagrams, photographs and index. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Signed by Yasser Seirawan. First edition. The 1990 WCC match between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov was held from October 8 to December 30. The match locale was split, with the first 12 games played in New York, USA, and the final 12 in Lyons, France. The prize fund was three million dollars, with 5/8 going to the winner. This he accomplished by defeating Johann Hjartarson 3½ to 1½, Artur Yusupov 4½ to 3½ and Jan Timman 6½ to 2½.Perhaps as a psychological ploy, Karpov suggested a last minute change to the rules in the pre-match press conference. Karpov argued… Read More

Every chess player hopes to set off brilliant combinations and win games in a blaze of glory. Such combinations do not come into being by themselves, however; they appear only as the result of proper chess strategy. It is therefore surprising that so few books deal with this highly important subject, and understandable that Pachman's modern classic has been so enthusiastically received by chessplayers at all levels.
Ludĕk Pachman, a Czech grandmaster, has long had an international reputation as a chess theorist, but until now his work has not been available in English. This present… Read More
