Annotations by A Alekhine. An account of the tournament by G A Thoumas. (Betts: 25-65; Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5344) First edition.

In September of 1922, the organizers of the Hastings chess congress decided to hold a masters tournament which would pit two English masters against four of the best from the European continent. The participants of the double round robin were Alexander Alekhine, Efim Bogoljubov, Akiba Rubinstein, Siegbert Tarrasch, George Alan Thomas, and Frederick Yates. Alekhine managed to edge out superstar Rubinstein by half a point in the final, winning his most famous game ever against long time rival Bogoljubov, whereas Rubinstein struggled for over a hundred moves against Thomas only to come up short at the end. The 30 games are fully annotated by Alekhine, with some notes from The Field column added. A distant third and fourth was a tie, Bogoljubow and Thomas with 4 1/2 points. Fifth was the aging Tarrasch with 4 and Yates sixth with 2 1/2.

5 photographs in varying size and subject. Vera Menchik black and white photo Oblong octavo (8" x 10") with Menchik seated at the board in thought during the 1934/35 Hasting chess congress. Vera Menchik was a Russian-born British-Czechoslovak chess player who became the first women's world chess champion. She also competed in tournaments with some of the world's leading male chess masters, with occasional successes including two wins over future world champion Max Euwe. Of all the memorable Hastings tournaments, this one must rank near the top for suspense and unexpected twists. The list of players was one of the most impressive in Hastings history, with former World Champion Capablanca, future champions Euwe and Botvinnik, championship contender Flohr, and the brilliant young Hungarian, Lilienthal. The tournament had gotten off to a slow start, with only Thomas able to win in the first round. Then things picked up a bit, as Thomas proceeded to outplay Capablanca and Botvinnik in rounds 2 and 3. [xvi]+190+[1 ad] pages with diagrams, plates and table. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5349) First edition. A reminder of pre World War I times was the international masters' tournament begun on April 7, 1922 at Pistyan in Czechoslovakia and concluded by the end of the month, for, with few exceptions, all the leading Continental players, nineteen in number, were on hand, and played the eighteen rounds through to completion. As a consequence a new chess king was developed in the person of E R Bogolijubow, one of the younger generation of Russian masters, who first came to public notice during the ill-fated tournament at Mannheim, Germany, which, when half over, was stopped by the World War. Bogoljubow went through with the loss of only one game - to Tartakower, who also won from Aljechin. Of the remaining seventeen games Bogoljubow won thirteen and and drew four, thus giving him a total of fifteen. Alexander Aljechin and Rudolph… Read More

Deutsche Schachzeitung was the first German chess magazine. Founded in 1846 by Ludwig Bledow under the title Schachzeitung der Berliner Schachgesellschaft, it took the name Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1872. (Another magazine used the title Deutsche Schachzeitung from 1846 to 1848.) When it ceased publication in December 1988 it was the oldest existing magazine in the world, having been published regularly since its founding in 1846 except for a five-year break (1945-1949) during World War II. Since January 1989, the Deutsche Schachzeitung was merged in the Deutsche-Schachblatter - Schach-Report which was edited in Hollfeld.
