About This Item
Garden City, NY:: Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc.,, 1945.. Hardcover first edition -. Near fine in gray cloth with gilt lettering in a very good dust jacket (chip to bottom of spine of dj) . First printing. An important early anthology - published while Moon was a literary editor with Doubleday, this is considered the first anthology of writings by and about Black Americans to be edited by a white man. The front cover of the dust jacket notes that this includes "writings by and about Negroes from slavery days to today's struggle for a share in American Democracy" while the back cover of the dust jacket promotes recent books published by Doubleday, Doran "towards a better understanding." Among the contributions in this anthology are those by W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Chester B. Himes, Roi Ottley, and others, as well as by white authors such as Muriel Rukeyser, Shirley Jackson, Erskine Caldwell, Dorothy Parker, Kay Boyle, J. F. Powers and more. Moon's literary career came to an end when he was named as a Communist symphathizer by McCarthy's infamous HUAC. 491 pp.
