About This Item
London Heinemann, 1937. . First edition; 8vo (238 x 160 mm); photographic illustrations, one (opposite p. 30) mildly soiled, otherwise near-fine; publisher's purple cloth, bookplate to pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper dated 1937, illustrated dust-jacket, chipped at corners, top edge, head and foot of spine, mild soiling, rippling to rear panel, otherwise a good copy.
This is Coward's first volume of autobiography with his now, famous opening lines: 'I was photographed naked on a cushion very early in life, an insane, toothless smile slitting my face and pleats of fat overlapping me like an ill-fitting overcoat. Later, at the age of two, I was photographed again. This time in a lace dress, leaning against a garden roller and laughing hysterically'.
