Pooh's daily newspaper,Kanga's housekeeping magazine,a game for Piglet, are just part of the Special Deliveries to the Forest. Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976),worked as E.H. Shepard. Born St. John's Wood,London, son of an architect.Educated at St Paul's School. Studied at Heatherley's Art School (1896-97) and at the Royal Academy Schools (1897-1902) where he won two scholarships. In 1907,the acceptance of two drawings by Punch marked the beginning of a nearly 50-year association with the magazine; he was elected to the table in 1921,becoming second cartoonist in 1935 and principal cartoonist,1945-49.During WWI he served in France,Belgium and Italy.A highly successful and prolific book illustrator, mainly in b/w,his collaboration with A.A. Milne resulted in a series of children's classics;in the words of his obituary in The Times 'the Pooh drawings were his greatest triumph, and perhaps because his own human and unassuming genius was so much in harmony with the tender facetiousness of his fellow contributor to Punch. . .' He was perhaps, the best-loved illustrator of children's books since Sir John Tenniel. Shepard was an inveterate sketcher, and although his finished drawings were usually the outcome of numerous pencil sketches, they always retained an appearance of spontaneity. He used pen and ink with exceptional flexibility, varying the weight and quality of his line for emphasis and expression. He excelled at depicting movement, and had a fine instinct for characterisation.Although best-known for his association with A.A. Milne,Shepard successfully illustrated a wide range of books. His drawings for 'The Wind in the Willows' were the only ones that the author,Kenneth Grahame, ever liked, while his illustrations for 'Everybody's Pepys' and 'Everybody's Boswell' demonstrated that he could handle adult historical subjects with aplomb.Late in life he illustrated his own autobiographical reminiscences 'Drawn from Memory' (1957) and 'Drawn from Life' (1961) with undiminished liveliness and humour. Bevis Hillier described Shepard as 'the perfect illustrator. . .He never allows his personality to obtrude. He translates, never transmutes'. He was awarded an OBE in 1972. Since April 2013,again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! So,please contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk ,because of the lighter weight and the value of this item, for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
