About This Item

London: Henry Sotheran, 1882. First edition. Hardcover. Orig. brown cloth, beveled edges. Teg. Very good. 32 pages in text. Folio, 41 x 29 cm. Thirty-six chromolithographs by Firmin-Didot in Paris, a firm that rivaled the color printing in England of Edmund Evans -- many plates with multiple images. MCLEAN, Victorian Book Design, p.98 called the plates, "extremely fine." These two Liverpool architects had previously created work for Day & Sons by W.R. Tymms, addressing the Victorian passion for illumination. Plates and text bright and clean, wear to backstrip extremities and corners, small library stamp front free endpaper, inscription head of title.
