London, [1797]: Printed for C. Cooke. 12mo. Cooke's Edition. 214(1)pp. Engraved frontispiece, engraved title page and regular title page. Folger notes that the date is conjectured from engravings. Added-engraved title page reads: Shakespeare's works: forming part of Cooke's pocket edition of the original & complete works of select British poets: or, entertaining poetical library: containing the most esteem'd poetic productions : superbly embellished. Embellished under the direction of C. Cooke, March 14, 1797. Engraved by W. Ridley from a drawing by W.H. Brown. With a final contents leaf (lacking in some recorded copies). Printmakers and/or illustrators named in volume. Contents: Life of Shakspeare -- Extracts from Mr. Pope's preface -- Extracts from Dr. Johnson's preface -- Recommendatory poems -- Dedication -- Venus and Adonis -- Dedication -- Rape of Lucrece -- Sonnets -- Passionate pilgrim -- Lover's complaint. Bound in full tree calf, wear to spine with chipping, some foxing or staining. Contemporary bookplate of Benjamin Dickinson of Tiverton and signed by him. A very good clean copy with very nice engravings. [English short title catalogue; ESTC, T93225.].
