Edinburgh. William Blackwood and Sons. 1870, 1870. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 20cm, first edition, vi,328p., with 8 illustrations by Richard Doyle, in half contemporary tan calf, gilt ruled raised bands, crushed black morocco label gilt, marbled boards, front and rear bookplates, name plate, some scuffing at the spine and fore of the boards, some wear at the edges of the boards, but a very good to fine sound copy. (tgc) - Despite the title, this is a witty novel that is credited with establishing Oliphant as a popular Victorian author. Published originally in Blackwood's Magazine in 1866, this is the first book publication which was revised by the author.
